Jewels and precious stones: our small guide about jewelry What does 750 °/°° gold mean? What does 18 K gold mean? Pure gold cannot be used to make a jewel because it is too malleable. Therefore it is used in an alloy with other metals (copper, silver, nickel). The relation between pure gold and the other metals is expressed in millesimals or in carats. The alloy is made up of two portions of pure gold and one portion of the other metal. What are the "4 Cs" of diamonds? They are the four distinctive features which serve to extablish the quality and the value of a diamond. The Cut, which must respect well-defined and excellent proportions can be: the Amsterdam cut (the most spred and valuable); the drop cut, the rose cut, the heart cut, the emerald cut (which are the less spread) The Clearity is also defined by a scale with letters which denote the dimensions of the imperfections. The Carat, the weight of the stones is expressed in carats What is the zircon? What is the difference between diamonds and zircons? The zircon is a synthetic stone, industrially produced, which imitates the diamond. It has a lawer degree of hardness in comparison with a diamond, but the chimical composition is almost the same. How to recognize the quality of pearls. High quality pearls must be perfectly round. They must not have superficial imperfections and they must be luminous. It is also important to know the duration of cultivation wich determines the thickness of pearly. As it is not verifiable at a glance it is necessary to ask a serious and skilful jeweler for a reliable purchase. Attentions which pearls need. Pearls are made of calcium carbonate. They may be ruined by creams, the alchool of pearfums and by the acids of perspiration. You should avoid the contact with these substances. After being worn they should be rubbed with a wool cloth in order to eliminate every kind of residuals which may corrode the surface. If it is necessary to wash them, you should use a delicate solution of water and anolin; after that they must be striing again by your jeweller because the string will be necessarely ruined. What is the difference between white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold? The gold is used in alloy with other metals in order to realize the jewels. In the 18k yellow gold there is 750 portions of pure gold and 250 of the other metals (mostly copper and silver). The relation between these metals determines the color of the alloy. If there is more copper, then the color turns in rose; if there is more silver and nickel, then it turns in white. The value is always the same. How to recognize real golden jewellery from imitations. Every kind of jewelery must be stamped on according to the law. Next to the stamp of gold there must be printed the trade-mark or the manufacturer's stamp. The jeweller can dispel any doubt by a simple proof: as gold is unassailable by acids, he will scratch a bit of metal on a little test stone; then he will wet it with a drop of acid. If the mark disappears, it will mean that the object is an imitation. Which is the difference between silver "800" and "925"? In a silver object marked "925" the sterling is composed by 925 thousandths of pure silver and by 75 thousandths of other metals among which there is copper. The sterling "800" is composed by 800 thousandths of pure silver and 200 thousandths of other metals. This combination gives it more hardness without changing its value which is due to the quantity of precious metal inside it, but also and above all its workmanship. Both sterlings are used: it depends on the kind of object to produce and the qualities of resistance it must have.
